RANCHI: JMM supremo Shibu Soren, his son Hemant and daughter-in-law Kalpana, and chief minister Champai Soren were among 40 star campaigners of the party for the Lok Sabha polls, a party leader said on Saturday. According to a list submitted to the chief electoral officer of Jharkhand, Shibu Soren will lead the campaign in Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam.
The list also includes Bishunpur MLA Chamra Linda, who filed his nomination papers as an Independent candidate for Lohardaga Lok Sabha seat by going against the party’s wish. The seat went to the Congress in the seat-sharing agreement in the ruling alliance in the state.
Besides, former chief minister Hemant Soren‘s press advisor Abhishek Prasad Pintu, who recently faced ED questioning in a money laundering investigation linked to alleged illegal mining and land deals in the state, also found a place in the list of star campaigners.
The list mentions Hemant Soren, who is behind bars, as the second prominent campaigner after the party supremo.
Soren, who is currently lodged at Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Central Jail, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam on January 31.
His wife Kalpana, who is contesting the by-election to the Gandey assembly constituency, has also been included in the list as a prominent campaigner for the Lok Sabha polls, which will be held in four phases in Jharkhand from May 13.

New Delhi:

Priyanka Chopra recently delved into the cultural contrasts between her and husband Nick Jonas, highlighting how after six years of marriage, they’ve found a harmonious balance. Priyanka Chopra shared that even though she and Nick Jonas come from large families, their upbringings were distinctly diverse in terms of cultural influences, necessitating a process of adapting and understanding each other’s backgrounds. During a conversation with the Read the Room podcast, Priyanka spoke about their mutual appreciation for each other’s home countries and readiness to immerse themselves in one another’s cultures.

Priyanka then shared how an Indian family like hers would “speak over each other’s sentences” but this wasn’t the case with the Nick’s family. She stated that things like these “were really hard” for her to learn. She said, “Before you finish your sentence, I know what you are saying so I am just going to tell you. That’s just how we are culturally.”

Priyanka added, “We are just like, ‘let’s just go!’. We are loud and every one speaks over each other. So for Nick, he had to learn to cut people off, he had to learn to speak over everyone. He is like, ‘aye, I am saying this!’. I had to learn how to wait, let someone finish their sentence. I’m like, ‘I know what you are saying but I’ll wait for you to finish.”

She elaborated on the adjustments they both made, revealing her own challenge in learning to patiently wait for someone to finish speaking. On the other hand, Nick, who had limited exposure to India before marrying Priyanka, has since made multiple visits to the country. Recently, he extended his stay in India for several weeks to partake in the festivities of Holi alongside Priyanka and her extended family.

Priyanka and Nick got married in 2018. They welcomed their daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, in 2022.

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi took a jocular stance on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent accusations of “wealth redistribution” on Saturday, likening them to the ramblings of an uncle at weddings.
Addressing a rally in Gujarat’s Valsad, Priyanka Gandhi responded to PM Modi‘s claims by humorously imagining a scenario where an “Uncle Ji” warns about the Congress stealing jewelry and distributing it to others. She remarked that such statements would likely be met with laughter rather than concern.
Gandhi criticized PM Modi’s rhetoric, suggesting that he resorts to such tactics because of the weight his position carries. “Today the prime minister of the country is talking such nonsense to you because he thinks people will take his words seriously given the importance of the post he holds,” she said.
In the past few days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shifted his line of attack – from dynastic politics and corruption to the Congress’s alleged plan of wealth redistribution and inheritance tax.
Priyanka Gandhi, in her rally, specifically addressed Modi’s recent focus on wealth redistribution and inheritance tax, dismissing them as nonsensical and suggesting they stem from anxiety. “He is now warning people that Congress will enter their houses with an X-ray machine to conduct a search, then snatch your ornaments as well as ‘mangalsutra’ kept in safes and give it away to others. Is that even possible? Is he doing this out of nervousness,” Priyanka Gandhi responded.
Moreover, she also targeted Modi over inflation, labeling him as a “mehengai” man.
Rahul Gandhi also took aim at Narendra Modi over his claims. “You have heard the prime minister’s speeches. He is scared. It’s possible that he may shed tears on stage,” he said on Friday.

New Delhi:

A new day, a new update about Kalki 2898 AD (and this time, it’s a major one). After teasing fans with the character posters and behind-the-scenes photos, the makers of the film have finally unveiled the release date. On Saturday, the official X (formerly known as Twitter) handle of the film’s production house Vyjayanthi Films dropped a new poster featuring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan in never-seen-before avatars.

Initially scheduled to release on May 9, the film will now hit theatres on June 27 this year. Announcing the release date, the makers wrote, “All the forces come together for a better tomorrow on 27-06-2024.” Take a look at the post below.

Earlier today, the makers released a new video, teasing a major announcement scheduled for Saturday (April 27) at 5 PM. In the video, shared on the official Instagram page, Amitabh Bachchan’s character is seen sporting long hair and a bearded look, dressed in rugged clothes. His face is covered in bandages. The actor reaches towards a shivalinga and says, “Ab mera samay aa gya hai. Mere antim yudh ka samay aa gya hai. [Now is my time. The time for my final battle has come.]” Subsequently, a text flashes on the screen: “Stay tuned tomorrow at 5 PM.” The caption of the video reads, “The time has come! Announcement at 5 PM tomorrow. Stay tuned.”

Kalki 2898 AD features a star-studded cast including Kamal Haasan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Disha Patani. The mythology-inspired sci-fi film is directed by Nag Ashwin. Backed by Aswini Dutt, Kalki 2898 AD will be released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

NEW DELHI: US ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, has emphasized the remarkable success of Indian immigrants in the United States, noting that over 10% of Fortune 500 company CEOs are Indian immigrants who studied in the US. In a statement that underscores the change in corporate America, Garcetti said, “The old joke was you could not become a CEO in the US if you are Indian, now the joke is you cannot become a CEO in America if you are not Indian, whether it is Google, Microsoft or Starbucks, people have come and made a big difference.”
During an interview at the American Center, the envoy highlighted the US’s commitment to fostering people-to-people ties, particularly through educational exchanges, which he described as having the potential to “last a lifetime.” Garcetti revealed that the US mission in India is gearing up to handle an increased number of student visa applications this year, reflecting a continuing trend of rising interest among Indian students in American education.
Further commenting on the visa process, Garcetti recalled President Joe Biden’s directive to reduce visa wait times for Indians, saying, “He did! It is the first time, I think in American history that a President has told an ambassador—get those visas waiting time down.” The ambassador also noted the enthusiastic support for this initiative among Americans who are keen on strengthening ties with India.
Highlighting the depth of the educational ties, Garcetti noted, “I think nothing ties our countries and our people together, more than our exchange students.” He elaborated on the profound impact of these exchanges, explaining how they facilitate mutual understanding and respect between the two nations.
The ambassador also touched on the logistical challenges of reducing visa wait times but framed these challenges as positive indicators of the strong desire among Indians to engage with the US. Last year, the US issued a record 140,000 student visas to Indian applicants, the highest in the world, demonstrating the significant demand and the successful efforts of US consular services to meet these needs.
Garcetti’s comments were made during a pre-departure orientation for Indian students at the American Center, highlighting the ongoing commitment to fostering educational exchanges that build long-lasting relationships between India and the United States.

Weekly Tech Recap: In a world of ever evolving technology, keeping up with all the latest trends and updates can feel like an uphill battle. But fear not! Our Weekly Tech Recap will help you get a grip on the latest trends, breakthroughs and controversies in the tech world. This week we had a lot of major updates including WhatsApp threatening to quit India if it was forced to break its end to end encrtyption, Apple resuming gen AI related talks with OpenAI and JioCinema releasing a new premium subscription starting at just RS 29/month.

So without further adieu, let’s take a look at the top tech news of the week.

1) Apple resumes talks with OpenAI for implementing AI features in iOS 18:

Earlier this year, Apple and Google began discussions to bring many generative AI features to the upcoming iOS 18 operating system. Now, the Tim Cook-led company has reportedly “renewed” talks with OpenAI to bring generative AI capabilities to iPhones.

According to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurnman, Apple and OpenAI had begun discussions about a deal earlier this year, but work has been minimal since then. The report states that Apple and OpenAI are in talks to power a chatbot-like feature in iOS 18.

2) WhatsApp’s warning about leaving India:

“As a platform, we are saying, if we are told to break encryption, then WhatsApp goes” WhatsApp’s counsel told the Delhi High Court this week.

The personal messaging app has filed a plea in the Delhi HC challenging the Centre’s IT Rules 2021, which force social media intermediaries to identify the first originator of information.

In its 2021 petition, the Meta-backed firm said the Indian government’s order to identify the first originator of the information was a threat to its “end-to-end encryption” and “users’ privacies.” It said the traceability provision was against the “fundamental right to privacy.”

3) Jio Cinema’s new OTT plans:

JioCinema rolled out a new monthly premium plan subscription plan for just 29 for individuals and a Family pack for 89. Notably, last year JioCinema had rolled out a 999 annual plan that provided access to ad-free Hollywood content and ad-supported local-language programming and sports.

4) Nothing data leak:

UK based smartphone maker Nothing admitted this week that a ‘vulnerability’ had affected the data concerning its community members data. Nothing admitted the issue in a statement shared with LiveMint, but stated that the ‘vulnerability’ only affected email addresses belonging to community members. No personal information like passwords, names or payment information was compromised, it said.

5) Tinder will allow you to share date plans with friends and family:

Popular dating app Tinder recently announced a new feature called ‘Share My Date’, which allows users to share their date plans directly with their friends and family. The latest feature could help users share their excitement about their new match with their loved ones and get their feedback, while also acting as a safety measure.

Tinder says that will allow users to share information about their latest match with friends or loved ones directly from the app using a single link. Recipients will be able to access a wealth of information including the match’s location, date, time and a photo when they click on the link. What’s more, the recipient doesn’t need to install the Tinder app to access this information and can view the details through their web browser.

6) Apple ‘Let Loose’ event to be held on May 7:

Apple has officially announced a special event scheduled for Tuesday, May 7 at 7 a.m. Pacific Time (7:30 PM IST), which will be streamed live on the company’s official website. With the tagline “Let Loose” accompanying the invitation, it’s evident that iPads will be the centerpiece of the event.

The event’s invitation prominently features an Apple Pencil, hinting at a focus on iPad updates. As per The Verge, speculation suggests that the iPad Pro will receive substantial enhancements since its last overhaul in 2021, potentially including an OLED display with a slight size increase to 13 inches for the larger model.

AMBALA: A group of farmers on Saturday protested against the BJP’s Ambala candidate Banto Kataria during her Lok Sabha polls campaign in the Naggal village. The protesters asked Kataria why the farmers marching towards Delhi to seek a legal guarantee on minimum support price for crops were not allowed to proceed to the national capital and press for their demands.
Gurmeet Singh Majri, district president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Shaheed Bhagat Singh), and other protesters also asked why barricades were erected at the Shambhu border point and why force was used against the farmers marching to Delhi.
Aseem Goyal, the Ambala City MLA and the minister of state for transport, tried to placate the farmers but they continued to protest.
Majri said the farmers will continue to oppose BJP candidates in the villages.
Farmers have been holding protests against BJP candidates during their Lok Sabha polls campaigns to seek answers about their demands not being met.
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha spearheaded a ‘Delhi Chalo’ march by farmers to press the government to accept their demands, including a legal guarantee on minimum support price for crops.
The protesting farmers have been camping at the Shambhu and the Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 when their march was stopped by security forces.
